And back to the techno.

Truth be told, I'm getting ever so slightly bored with mixes, so I'm going to move sideways into more freeform stuff, kind of podcasty, sort of sound collage things. I'm only a few minutes into making my first one, so in the meantime, I'll post the last few mixes. Like this one.

More techno and house...

This is actually my favourite dance mix so far; all the beatmatching works, the phrasing and seguing is pretty good, and it has my favourite song-to-song transition of the whole lot, despite being from hard house to handbag. Which is nice.

The 80s, when I was alive.

It was, it has to be said, a good time for music. The music scene was a lot less fragmented and, well, Balkanised than it is today. It was actually worth keeping an eye on the charts, as well as listening to John Peel, and whatever pirate stations were in the vicinity.

Making mixes of 80s stuff is quite a lot of fun; BPMs are very rarely consistent, even when it's the Human League and they're using a Linn Drum Machine, so beatmatching is quite difficult, but the structure of most 80s songs (intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-chorus-fade), means you can segue stuff quite easily, so the first beat of Song 2 comes in on the silent last beat of Song 1.

Anyway, I've made a few 80s mixes. They get better as they get faster, oddly enough, but we're going to start  with this one...

No mix today.

Just this:- I fucking hate Coldplay. They're for people who find Radiohead a bit too hardcore.

The main reason I make these mixes...

...is that they're fun to make and listen to; kind of like it was fun to make and listen to compilation tapes back in the 80s. I listen to them at work and while I'm commuting, and I have to say I enjoy them hugely, they're all songs I like. But obviously I post them here, so I am trying to make them fun for everyone else too. They do tend to be a bit of a mishmash of styles, as you may have noticed; they jump around from techno to house to drum'n'bass to hardcore and back to techno. I might even throw the occasional bit of dubstep in too, just to shake things up. Though not in this one...

I’ve always liked being able to walk in time to the music in my ears.

In the old days of cassettes, it was a fairly hit and miss affair, but now that we live in the future, with all digital stuff and mp3s and beatmatching and tempo stretching and all that gubbins, it's easy peasy to make hour long mixes that you can walk in time to; it’s kind of like dancing along the street without actually dancing along the street (and some of us dance like we’ve got two left feet anyway). This mix is perfect for the walk from London Bridge station, where I get off the train in the morning, to St John St., where I work, and then back again at the other end of the day...
